The White Golden Retriever

The White Golden Retriever does not really exist as a breed. Golden Retrievers are either golden (amber) or cream color. Occasionally a mother will birth a near-white pup, but never a true white one. Breeders occasionally will cross-breed in order to obtain a white one but the result is clearly not a true Golden Retriever but a cross-breed. There has been quite a bit of hype regarding this fictional Retriever, which in the end has only encouraged breeders to charge a premium for this near-white breed. So it may be a good idea to shop around to make sure you are not paying a premium if you are seeking one.

Those who are in love with the white Golden Retriever should consider the English (or European) Golden Retriever. This breed's coat is light cream in color and can closely approach white at times. Most will probably be more satisfied going this route than the cross-bred route. Sticking with a pure breed will give you an easier time predicting what the characteristics of your dog will be. There are other differences between the American and European versions besides the color that you need to consider. The European breed often has a longer nose, larger mouth, and stockier build than the amber colored American version.

As a result of the beautiful color of the “white Golden Retriever,” demand has risen recently in the US; consequently the numbers of the English version have increased. If you are looking for a loyal, energetic, trainable family pet, you can't go wrong with the beautiful Golden!
